What is Executive or Leadership Coaching?


Professional Coaching is for men and women who are ready for change — whether a change in their effectiveness, a change in their quality of life, or a change in direction for their organization.  While we specialize in working with results-focused leaders who are at a Director level and above, anyone at any stage of his or her career can benefit from having a Leadership Coach.  


At Passionate Leader Institute, we are credentialed by the International Coach Federation (ICF) and abide by its guidelines and principles.  The ICF defines coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential, which is particularly important in today’s uncertain and complex environment. 


Our coaches believe that the client is the expert in his or her life and work and believe every client is creative, resourceful and unique.  We bring our value of knowing best practices based on our work with leaders around the world and skill in coaching to the relationship.


Standing on this foundation, our coach's responsibility is to:
• Discover, clarify, and align with what the client wants to achieve
• Encourage client self-discovery

• Encourage the client to consider possibilities and opportunities they may not ordinarily think about
• Elicit client-generated solutions and strategies
• Hold the client responsible and accountable



This process helps clients dramatically improve their outlook on work and life while improving their leadership skills and unlocking their potential.

Is there any evidence that coaching works?

Harvard Business Review did a study about coaching, the benefits, and impact. You can access that here.


In addition, a study of coaching* in Fortune 1000 companies asked 100 executives to assess the impact of the coaching that they had received. These executives received coaching for 6 months to one year. Here are some of their responses, along with the percentage reporting specific benefits:

• Improved productivity (53%)

Other studies have found that the return on investment in coaching top level managers and executives can often be as high as five or six to one. How long does a coaching relationship last?

There is no set answer to that question, since coaching is tailor-made to each person's needs.  Many of my clients retain me for at least six months to work on a specific challenge. Others partner for a longer period of time to work through a variety of challenges or to complete multi-year goals.

The goal of coaching is to move forward expeditiously towards what you desire.  A good coach will prod you constantly to optimize your performance. That's one reason coaching is so effective. And once people experience that effectiveness, they often make an extended commitment to coaching.
